If you are looking for an imaginative, healthy and inspiring way
to get children active this summer, then there’s just one
answer, YogaBugs: The One Bug Your Kids Should Catch by author and
yoga teacher Fenella Lindsell.
According to YogaBugs, 40,000 children catch the YogaBug each week
through teacher-led classes designed for 2½ to 7 years olds.
Now Lindsell, the creator of this unique story-based yoga for children
has released her book so that you can bring all the health benefits
of yoga to your children in your home, in the park or may be even
on the beach.
First, and very sensibly the book starts with an informative section
on the benefits of yoga for kids, the importance of warming up and
helps you understand the value of breathing and relaxation techniques.
Then it’s straight into the adventures.
Having read the introduction the night before to get a head start,
we headed into the garden where my 2½ and 4½ year
old were quick to whip their socks off. After some warm up neck
stretches, shoulder rolls and rocking horses we were ready for action.
Around twenty minutes later, having enjoyed the Underwater Party,
and now red faced from a considerable row across the ocean home,
and giggling whilst peering upside down at each other through our
legs (Dog), I realised that I hadn’t enjoyed playing with
my children so much for a very long time.
YogaBugs: The One Bug Your Kids Should Catch skilfully weaves together
safe Hatha yoga postures, breathing and relaxation techniques into
wild adventures and heroic journeys. Through fun-filled adventures,
children fly on mystical birds, float on magic carpets, ride on
dolphins, take supersonic missions to outer space and visit far
away beautiful places.
Yoga maintains strength and flexibility and can help prevent injury.
It can help with many aspects of children’s health, including
sleeping problems, anxiety, asthma, hyperactivity and sinus problems,
as well as troubling emotional issues.
A yoga teacher of 18 years, it is Fenella’s dream that all
children have the chance to try and enjoy yoga, a life skill that
will help them make the most of being a child, cope with the turbulent
teens and support them well into adulthood.
Both for those who have already caught the YogaBugs bug and those
curious to find out more, let’s hope it will bring yoga alive
to a generation in desperate need of activities that will drag them
away from the computer screen, use their magical powers of imagination
and help them to enjoy the valuable benefits of yoga.
